January Gloom

January 19, 2006

I'm glad it's already almost over...January, I mean. Out of all of the months of the year, January is the worst of em'. Bleak. Cold. Wet. Not to be a downer, but it's true, January is the bottom of the well as far as I'm concerned. January starts off with the most overrated, overblown holiday of em' all - New Year's Day. It's right at the beginning, and then you are sent off into your short days where you go to work in the dark and come home in the dark. Well, there is another holiday inserted right in the middle of the month, Martin Luther King Day, but the weather is never promising, and most of us don't get that day off. As a self employed person, I certainly don't, and those who do--is it a decent day or is the rain coming down in sheets with 50 mph winds? Could very well be (the latter)...It does tend to rain a lot in January...I thank my lucky stars I don't live in Seattle where it rained for more than 20 days in a row...but still, it is rainy, wet, very cold (cold being a relative term for California, I know, I'll admit it, I'm a whuss), and it just, and I was trying to avoid the word, sucks.

February, on the other hand gives us a hope for the spring. The hills have turned a lush green by February, and we have a couple of 'false spring' days to tantalize us with what lays ahead, and it's a short wait for March, being only 28 (or 29) days. March, of course brings it on--BAM! It's SPRING! The hills are still green, we might get a bit more rain, but not so much shivering as we slide on into April, when everything begins to bloom, my husband and I celebrate another anniversary, and then slide until the even more glorious May--which culminates with the Indy 500, and then on into June. Great weather, and here it comes--SUMMER!!!! July is my all time favorite month. We've got the 4th of July which is my personal favorite holiday, my birthday, and great weather--lots of outdoor events to enjoy in July--and August. Barbecues with family and friends are abundant and we can stay outside at night and enjoy our backyard. September starts to get us geared up for football and a change of seasons again with the promise of fun festivities into October with Halloween, and November with Thanksgiving. Then the year's finale is Christmas. I'm not a huge Christmas fan anymore, but it is a very special time and family traditions continue on...

And then there it is again...full circle...back to Bleak January...well, at least this year's January is almost over. Maybe I'll hibernate next year...
