What the $@!! is this?
That's a good question. When I started this site, web development had been a hobby that had transformed into earning a living. It was at the beginning of the Internet as we know it. Pre-facebook; Amazon was just starting out, and so was this developer. I created spacerock since shootingstar.com was not availbable. A spacerock is a meteor - a shooting star - hence the domain name. I understand that spacerock is also a musical genre; over the years, a few individuals have chastised me for having the domain, and at one point, someone was offering me some $$ to buy it - but obviously it's still here.
I play on this site; I break things on this site. If things aren't working quite right, it's really a low priority for me to fix it, unless I'm having one of those days where I am crazed to get something just right. My career has fluourished, particularly in the last couple of years, and I work for a municipality. I don't get to do all of the crazy programming and stuff I do here; I don't want to do crazy programming for my actual job. The pressure is tremendous on those programmers, and I admire our "codebenders" team at work. My capacity at work is that of a UX Designer, and instructor; we use Drupal and I teach our customers how to use it to maintain their websites. I never imagined I'd be a teacher (although I did teach HTML and Illustrator many many years ago at an adult program).
Things to Know
- I don't know how much traffic I get on this site; I haven't checked or implemented anything to track it. Maybe I should do that.
- I don't make a dime on this site. It's really my workshop, where I get to tinker.
I do have a site that I haven't launched for my web development, if I should be compelled to do some side work, but I haven't done that in a while; the demand for websites has significantly dwindled, thanks to Social Media and everything it does. It does work...I recently couldn't get anywhere with a state agency, so after battling for months to try to move a process along, I went on their facebook page, and told my tale of woe (without any slamming or negative name calling, etc) and posted the same exact post on their site in response to their top 5 posts. I had an email resolving my problem on the next business day!
That said, I hope maybe you know what the $@!! this is now. I'm still trying to figure it out.
