Going on a Witch Hunt for something 'normal'

Date: June 13, 2009

I seem to go through this a lot...I'll be preparing a recipe that calls for a pretty ordinary ingredient - in this case, it was red food coloring.  I had watched Bobby Flay's Throwdown show and he did a Red Velvet Cake.  Intrigued, I decided I wanted to try my hand at this.

It called for stuff like flour (I chose cake flour), eggs, etc.  It also called for a couple of tablespoons of red food coloring.  No problem...or so I thought.  I went to the store and all they had was a variety pack which had very tiny containers, and then they had larger bottles of yellow, green, and of all things - black!  Who uses black food coloring????

I went to another store and it was the same thing.  Yellow, green and black!  Hmmm...I wondered if everyone had seen Bobby Flay the other night and were buying up all of the red food coloring.

I finally found it at Safeway but found it pretty ridiculous that I had to go to more than one store to get a pretty ordinary item...

How come most of my rants involve grocery store visits?
